Welding positions are categorized by whether the joint is a fillet or groove weld, alongside the physical orientation of the plates or pipes and the weld axis. Our welders are qualified across the full range — shop and field, plate and pipe.
Fillet Weld Positions
Groove Weld Positions
The weld is performed from the upper side of the joint, where the face of the weld is approximately horizontal. In plate work it is 1F (fillet) or 1G (groove); for pipe work where the pipe is rotated during welding it is designated 1GR.
Heavily utilized in shop fabrication for flat plate panels, structural beams, and pre-rolled pipe spools where automated or manual rotation is possible — offering maximum deposition rates and ease of operation.
For fillet welds (2F), the weld axis is horizontal against a vertical plate and a horizontal plate base. For groove welds (2G), the plates are vertical with a horizontal weld axis, or it involves a vertical fixed pipe.
Common in structural steel framing, tank shell construction, and plate-to-web attachments where the workpiece cannot be easily tilted or rotated.
The axis of the weld runs vertically, with the plates positioned in a vertical plane (3F for fillet, 3G for groove).
Widely applied in building columns, structural framework erections, heavy machinery frames, and large storage tank vertical seam joints.
The welding operation is performed from the underside of the joint against a horizontal plate.
Essential for field erection, structural retrofitting, bridge construction, and box-girder assembly where components are already fixed in place and underside access is required.
5G positions the pipe horizontally without rotation, requiring the welder to transition through flat, vertical and overhead techniques around the circumference. 6G fixes the pipe at a 45° angle, introducing compound angles that test high-level welder proficiency.
Critical in process piping, oil and gas pipelines, pressure vessels, and industrial plant installation where pipes are rigidly fixed in place.
